Wound Care

Hello! I am both patient and provider for EDS folks, and I have a patient currently struggling with wound closure post-operatively and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? They are currently using steri-strips.

Hey @olusk ,

Welcome to Ben’s Friends. My name is Merl, I’m a member of the Modsupport team on our network.

Wound healing with EDS is notoriously difficult. It is often suggested that a multi stage approach be undertaken, with internal biodegradable stitches to support the deeper tissue healing in addition to external tissue support. For some people steri-strips may be adequate, but for some the tension on the skin can cause it to tear, this can cause scarring on top of scarring, making the healing process even more difficult. In some scenarios there is a matrix (a type of dermatological glue) that can be applied to assist with both closure and encourage healing. There are also some medications which can assist to regulate biological signalling around the production of collagen, allowing the wound to mesh better. But this needs to be investigated and managed by a trained/qualified dermatologist.

I would strongly suggest a consultation with an EDS experienced dermatologist is a must at the very least, so an appropriate individualised assessment and treatment plan can be established. Some surgeons will often give a standard 6-8week healing timeline and with no underlaying conditions, that timeline is about right. But with EDS that healing timeline can be highly variable and need a much more specialised approach.

Hope it helps
